How to ground a safety cabinet

To ensure safety in the workplace, it is important to prevent electrostatic discharge when handling flammable liquids.

If Class 1 flammable liquids are going to be dispensed from the safety cabinet, it needs to be grounded. Industry best practice includes Class 2 combustible liquids if they are held near, at, or above the liquid’s flashpoint.

When grounding a safety cabinet, internal and external grounding needs to be considered. For external grounding, locate the safety cabinet’s ground screw on the right hand side of the cabinet. Use a wrench or nut driver to loosen the screw. Attach the ground wire and retighten the screw. The other end of the ground wire needs to be attached to a ground bus or ground rod.

Ensuring Internal cabinet grounding when dispensing from inside the cabinet is a must. Continuous metal-to-metal contact must be kept. You may need to remove a small area or patch of paint in order to fully come in contact with metal. Certain grounding clamps may be fitted with “teeth” or a similar design to pierce through the paint and ensure contact with metal is made. Best practice would be to sand down a small area of paint and attach the clamp in the sanded area.
